On 31 December, we set out on snowshoes through the snow-covered forests of Valtavaara and gradually make our way towards the summit. Our timing follows the natural rhythm of the day: the aim is to reach the higher landscapes during the last daylight hours of the year.
Along the way, we stop by the fire for a warm Finnish lunch of salmon soup, rye bread and hot wild berry juice. Before continuing, there is time for a simple symbolic moment: holding a little snow in your hands and quietly leaving something from the old year behind.
Near the summit, we slow down and watch the daylight fade over the winter landscape. A visible sunset depends on the weather, but clear skies are not essential – changing light, snowfall and winter clouds are all part of Valtavaara at this time of year.
Afterwards, we descend through the blue winter twilight, using headlamps when needed. The tour covers approximately 5–7 km in natural winter terrain and requires a moderate level of fitness. Previous snowshoeing experience is not required.
The experience includes a professional local nature guide, transfers from the Ruka area and Kuusamo centre, snowshoes and poles, a headlamp, and a warm outdoor lunch.
A quiet way to spend the final afternoon of the year outdoors – with the evening still free for your own New Year’s Eve plans.
