Wild Camping and overnight parking in hiking destinations

Parking (and sleeping in your vehicle) is allowed wherever it is not prohibited by traffic signs, meaning the landowner has not forbidden parking. In national parks and nature reserves, vehicles may be parked in official parking areas and immediately adjacent to roads. Forest roads are not official roads, and off-road driving is only permitted with the landowner’s permission.

Parking, wild camping, and overnight stays in vehicles must not cause more than minor harm to the environment. It is also important that parking does not block other traffic or obstruct the road. On maps, official roads are shown as solid lines of varying thickness, while dashed lines do not indicate a road.

Legislation does not define wild camping separately; it falls under parking and off-road traffic regulations. The law does not set an exact time limit for parking, but generally, 1-2 days is considered reasonable. Parking is regulated by the Road Traffic Act (in Finnish), and off-road driving by the Off-Road Traffic Act (in Finnish).

Making an open fire is only allowed with the landowner’s permission. An open fire includes, for example, a campfire, twig stove, and disposable grill.

Wild camping is regulated by the Road Traffic Act, the Off-Road Traffic Act, and local rules; it is not part of Everyone’s Rights.
