On the first morning of the year, we set out before daylight and climb on snowshoes through the snow-covered forests of Valtavaara, the highest point in Kuusamo.
Our headlamps light the way while the forest is still dark. As we climb higher, the darkness gradually turns into deep blue winter light and the surrounding fell landscape begins to appear.
At the summit, we welcome the new year with a glass of alcohol-free sparkling spruce shoot drink and take a moment to enjoy the winter landscape. A visible sunrise depends on the weather, but clear skies are not essential – snowfall, clouds and changing light are all part of a January morning on Valtavaara.
During the tour, we stop at a traditional Finnish kota, light a fire and enjoy a warm smoked reindeer sandwich with hot wild berry juice.
The approximately 6 km route includes both uphill and downhill sections and takes around four hours. Snowshoeing in fresh snow can be physically demanding, so a moderate level of fitness is required. Previous snowshoeing experience is not necessary.
The experience includes a professional local nature guide, snowshoes and poles, a headlamp, breakfast by the fire, a New Year’s toast and pick-up and drop-off in the Ruka area.
A simple way to begin the year: snow, fire, food and a few quiet hours outdoors.
