Ruka-Kuusamo is now faster and easier to reach from Europe

Northern Lights in the night sky, deeply snow-covered forests, reindeer safaris and unforgettable nature experiences near the Arctic Circle: Finnish Lapland will be even faster and easier to reach for travellers from Germany during the winter season 2026–2027. Lufthansa Group is expanding its flight offering to Kuusamo and strengthening accessibility to the popular outdoor destination of Ruka-Kuusamo. A new Eurowings connection from Berlin will be introduced, while Lufthansa will add flights from Frankfurt during the busiest winter weeks.

With these new connections, Lufthansa Group is responding to the growing demand for winter travel to the far north. For German travellers, planning a trip to Ruka-Kuusamo will become even more flexible and convenient, whether for an active winter holiday, a family vacation or a long-awaited Northern Lights journey.

New connection from Berlin

Eurowings will launch a new route between Berlin and Kuusamo from 20 December 2026 to 14 March 2027. Flights will operate every Sunday, providing travellers from Berlin and eastern Germany with even easier access to Finnish Lapland.

Additional Lufthansa flights from Frankfurt

Lufthansa is also further expanding its services to Kuusamo. The existing connection from Frankfurt will gain an additional weekly frequency during the peak season from 3 February to 10 March 2027. During this period, flights will be available on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The Saturday service will operate throughout the winter season from 28 November 2026 to 20 March 2027.

The Frankfurt–Kuusamo route is one of the most successful international connections at Kuusamo Airport. Since its launch at the end of 2017, it has made a significant contribution to establishing the region as an attractive winter destination in the German-speaking market and promoting long-term tourism growth.

Genuine winter experiences: Northern Lights, reindeer safaris and plenty of snow

Ruka-Kuusamo is one of Finland’s most versatile winter destinations. While the renowned Ruka Ski Resort attracts visitors with around 200 days of skiing, 41 slopes and reliable snow conditions, the region offers far more than traditional winter sports. Outdoor enthusiasts can experience the full diversity of a Lapland winter: reindeer sled rides through snow-covered forests, husky safaris across the Arctic wilderness, winter walks and snowshoe excursions in the silence of the north, or the fascinating experience of watching the Northern Lights dance across the night sky.

Several national parks, including the famous Oulanka National Park, offer unforgettable nature experiences in a largely untouched winter landscape. Frozen waterfalls, deeply snow-covered forests and spectacular river scenery make the region a paradise for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

At the same time, Ruka-Kuusamo stands out for its attractive value for money. High-quality accommodation, short distances and a wide range of activities make the region appealing to families as well. While children enjoy their first turns on the snow or encounter huskies up close, parents can share unforgettable adventures in Finland’s winter wonderland.

International winter events create unique experiences

In addition to its nature and outdoor adventures, Ruka-Kuusamo has also established itself as a host of renowned winter events. The winter season traditionally begins with the FIS Ruka Nordic World Cup opening, one of the most important competitions in international Nordic skiing. The region is also home to the Polar Night Light Festival, the northernmost light art festival in the world. The outdoor ice hockey tournament Pipolätkä likewise attracts hundreds of teams and thousands of visitors to Ruka every year.
