Edelweiss starts operating flights from Zurich to Kuusamo in winter 2024

Air connections between Europe and Kuusamo are set to improve further as Edelweiss launches route flights from Zürich to Kuusamo in the winter of 2024.

Released 22.8.2023

A weekly flight will be available on Fridays from the beginning of February to the end of March.

"Earlier in early June, Eurowings announced the opening of a new air connection from Düsseldorf, Germany to Kuusamo. The newly announced weekly route flight from Switzerland to Kuusamo significantly enhances Central Europe's position as a departure market for Ruka-Kuusamo," says Mats Lindfors, CEO of Ruka-Kuusamo Tourism Association.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, there were direct charter flights to Kuusamo from Switzerland, but these flight series have not returned to the offerings after the pandemic. Edelweiss's new route flight restores the connection and creates an easy way for Swiss travelers to journey to Ruka-Kuusamo. Swiss guests are particularly interested in Finnish sauna culture, winter nature experiences, and the Northern Lights.

The departure city of the new route flight, Zürich, is the largest city in the country in terms of population and the capital of the Zürich canton. The city has over 400,000 inhabitants, and its metropolitan area covers around 3 million people. Zürich is widely regarded as the center of Switzerland's business and economy.

Direct route flights from Kuusamo Airport to Europe also provide a convenient way for the locals of Kuusamo to travel abroad. The flights operated by Edelweiss, Eurowings, and Lufthansa transport holiday makers to Germany and Switzerland in just a few hours, and with excellent connecting flights, to other parts of the world as well.

"The opening of route flights to Kuusamo in the winter of 2024 by two significant European airlines speaks highly in behalf of the region's attractiveness in the minds of international guests. Our long-term efforts to develop international tourism are beginning to bear pleasant fruit," Lindfors rejoices.
