Sled Dog Sports and Kuusamo MD

Kuusamo MD is a middle‑distance sled dog race that has been organised since 2007; the abbreviation *MD* comes from the English term *Middle Distance*.

The sled dogs and their mushers compete for the title of the fastest team in a two‑day race with three classes based on the size of the dog team.

MD4, the four‑dog class, covers a distance of 20 km.

MD6, the six‑dog class, is run in a triathlon style with three segments:

  • On Saturday, competitors race a 20 km sprint and a 20 km freight segment, where additional weights of 10 kg per dog are loaded onto the sled.
  • On Sunday, they compete in a 43 km marathon.
All segment times are combined, and the fastest team wins the Triathlon.

MD12, the twelve‑dog class, covers a distance of 43 km.

On Sunday there is also a children’s class: a 100‑metre race with one dog.

The start and finish are located close to each other, offering an excellent opportunity to watch the teams both departing and returning. In the pit area, spectators can also observe how the dogs and mushers prepare for the race.

Welcome to discover the world of sled dog sports!
