Reindeer looking for humans

Is this the most arctic summer job in the world?

We hired two reindeer herders for two summer months. Among hundreds of applicants, we've chosen two persons who love artic animals, outdoor life, unspoiled nature and bonfires under the midnight sun. This is truly their dream job.

The reindeerherders are Amelia and Suzana! Amelia started the reindeerherder job in June and Suzana will arrive in August.

Read from Ruka Coordinates Blog how Amelia experienced the Midsummer under the midnight sun.

More reindeer than people

The semi-domesticated reindeer enables the traditional Lappish life. We have a reindeer guarantee: you will definitely meet a reindeer in Kuusamo. There are about 185 000 reindeer in Finland and they all spend a part of the year roaming free on the fell.

"Reindeer roam free in summer, they’re on heat when the first snow falls and come home before snow covers the ground permanently. The training and work season for reindeer that pull a sledge is in the heart of winter.

In January there’s already a lot of snow and most reindeer are at home already. Once we’ve fed the reindeer in the morning, we still go around the fir forests in the snowmobile to look for their missing peers. The day is short but incredibly beautiful. In spring when the snow has melted enough the reindeer are allowed out to summer pastures again."

Summer holiday adventures

If you'd rather just relax on your summer vacation, Kuusamo has a variety of things to do and see. There'll be an easy access summer weekly program from the beginning of June until the end of September.
