Natural wonders
Kuusamo’s main sight is its unique natural environment. A visit the Oulanka National Park, near Ruka, is not to be missed. The Park covers an area of 270 square kilometres, packed with breath-taking landscapes, a multitude of lakes, rivers and waterfalls, and dozens of rare animal and plant species. Highlights include the Jyrävä and Kiutakongas rapids and many more natural landmarks.
There are many hiking trails in Oulanka. The best known are the Karhunkierros (Bear’s) Trail (80 km) and the shorter Pieni Karhunkierros Trail. The Karhunkierros Trail starts from the northern boarder of Kuusamo county and ends on one of the highest hills of Kuusamo, Rukatunturi (500m). The Pyhän Jyssäys Trail takes you to another hill, Pyhävaara. Riisin Rietas on top of Riisitunturi hill has a great view over Kitka lake, one of the largest untouched lakes in Finland. You can take a virtual trip through the landscape around Ruka on the Virtual Ruka page. But nothing can compare with the reality.
Cultural programme and events
The culture and congress centre Kuusamo Hall in the very heart of the town has a cinema, a conference hall, and offers various exhibitions throughout the year. You can learn about the history of Kuusamo at the local history museum, which is about 500 metres from the centre of the town. Most of the exhibition is outdoor, including replicas of the houses and everyday life of the pioneers from southern Finland who first settled in Kuusamo. The museum is mainly in function during summer.
The Hannu Hautala photographic centre shows an intriguing collection of pictures of the Kuusamo landscape and the creatures that inhabit it. The village of Posio has the world’s most northerly ceramics plant, Pentik, named after the outstanding Finnish designer, Anu Pentik, whose workshop is always open for visitors. Pentik includes a small, but highly original international museum of coffee cups, where guests can sample excellent coffee, as well as a gift shop with collections of ceramics. You can find more details of exhibitions and other events in Kuusamo in the Events Calendar.
