After a long, snowy winter, when May turns into June, the countryside around Kuusamo suddenly becomes drenched in summer light, warmth and fresh greenery. The average temperature in June is around 20 ¢ªC, and the midnight sun casts its light upon the Ruka centre in Kuusamo from 9th June to 1st July. The magic of summer reaches its climax with the midsummer night celebration that lasts throughout the night of 21st June. However, the nights remain bright well into August. During nature's final celebration of summer, the wilderness dresses in glorious colours to celebrate the end of the season: in September, when the first night frosts start to bite, plants put up a display of hundreds of shades of orange, red and yellow. This period, known as ruska, is the most popular time of visit for the Finnish travellers to Kuusamo.

Heavy snowfall in November and December turns the autumn into winter. The ice cover on the many lakes and the abundant snow enables a variety of adrenaline-raising activities, such as snowmobiling in the vast wilderness, ice fishing and snowshoeing. Not to forget the breath-taking sceneries with the snow-covered trees, a landscape not easy to forget!
