Important updates on ski tracks in Ruka and Kuusamo:

Updated on 26.11.2014:

  • Open now: First snow track at Petäjäkangas (2 km, return), 5 km at Ruka Ski Stadium (in use of FIS Ruka Nordic competitors during 27.-30.11.2014) and 6,8 km at Saarua Lit trail. Talvijärvi Trail (1,8 km, skiing with dogs also allowed) can be used at own risk; the track is on top of the ice cover (on Talvijärvi lake).
  • Updated information about the ski tracks and route map: www.mski.fi/kuusamo_eng/.
  • In the beginning of each winter season: The first ski track on man-made snow in Kuusamo Petäjäkangas, length 2 km, Nordic + skating. For more info see www.ruka.fi/firstsnowtrack.

SKI TRAIL MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE

  • Ski trails in Ruka area: Saarua Lit Trail, Ruka Ring Route and Vuosseli Route Ski trails
  • Valtavaara Route, Talvijärvi Dog Trail Ski trails

  • Kuontivaara Route (dog trail), Ski Stadium Trails Ski trails

Ski trails are maintained within 12 hours after snowfall and daily during 15.2.-15.4. Saarua Lit Trail, Ruka Ring Route and Ruka Ski Stadium 5 km track will be maintained daily during 20.12-6.1. Other routes will be maintained usually on Thursday or Friday. In case of a snowfall the trails will be maintained after the snowfall has ended.

Cross-Country Skiing

The possibilities for cross-country skiing in Kuusamo are excellent. The total length of cross-country ski trails is 152,5 km, of which 33,5 km are illuminated (at Ruka area: 71,5 km, of which 16 km illuminated). Northern Finland is one the most exceptional places on earth for cross-country skiing.

At the beginning of the winter, about half of the marked trails are maintained, but from the middle of February all trails are maintained. Along the trails, there are resting places, e.g., fireplaces and lean-to shelters. The lights are on along the lit trails daily until 9 pm.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING ROUTES IN RUKA
The following presents the cross-country skiing routes. Each route has the opening times, style of skiing it is suited for, level of difficulty and the length of the route.

Illuminated trails (lights are turned off at 9 p.m.)
Saarua Lit Trail, medium difficulty 12 km

• Kaltiolampi–Uuttusuo–Saarua–Uuttusuo–Kaltiolampi
• This trail is the first trail in Ruka area to be opened each winter according to the snow fall and it will stay open throughout the season. Suitable for traditional and skating styles

Ski Stadium cross-country skiing trails, difficult 5 km
• Competition skiing trails, 5 km of which are lit
• Open throughout the season, suitable for traditional and skating styles
• During 15 February - 15 April also 7,5 km and 10 km

Ruka ring route, difficult 9 km
• Kaltiolampi–Uuttusuo–Saarua–Ski Stadium trails
• Open throughout the season, suitable for traditional and skating styles
• The trail is skied one way between Saaruan Tupa–Ski Stadium

Oulanka National Park Wilderness Trail, medium difficulty 26 km
• Kiutaköngäs–Juuma
• Open mid-February to mid-April, traditional style, the route is levelled, no tracks
• This route is suitable for wider skis and snowshoes

Please note: Rukanportti (Ruka-Ko, S-Market Ruka, Ruka Adventures and Rukan Lomapalvelu) parking areas are reserved for customers visiting these premises. Parking is not allowed along roads.

Skiing with your dog
There are four routes in Ruka-Kuusamo are that allow dogs:
- Talvijärvi dog trail 2 km (Ruka)
- Kuontivaara route 20 km (Ruka); this track can be skied to both directions, so a shorter route is also possible.
- Kuusamo ring route 17 km (Kuusamo)
- Aurinkolatu "Sunny Trail" 27 km (Kuusamo)
The owner of the dog must take care of dog droppings. Dogs must not cause disturbance to other skiers or break the Nordic skiing trail. Dogs must be kept in leash.

Reindeer Farm & Ski Trail Cafe Lammintupa (Vuosseli route): Closed. 
Vuosselin Pirtti (Ruka round route): Closed.

Korpikahvila (Vuosseli route): Open daily at 10-16.
Rukajärvi Kotakahvila (Pyhävaara route): Closed.
Kuontivaara hut (Kuontivaara route): Closed.

Kumpuvaara scenery cafe (Kumpuvaara route): open according to pre-orders (ski and snowmobile tracks are closed).
Basecamp Oulanka (Juuma wilderness route): Open Tuesday-Saturday at 10-16, closed on Sundays and Mondays.
Iivaaran Eräkartano (Iivaara route): Closed.

A number of cross-country skiing events are arranged, such as the "border to border" skiing excursion— the longest in the whole world (444 km). The route starts in Kuusamo close to the eastern border and ends in Sweden at the City of Haparanda, just across the western border of Finland.
