SkiPasses online, already since 1999!
Ruka and Pyhä were proud to be the first ski resorts in the world to offer their customers true Internet ticket sales, since december 1999. At the moment over 10 % of total sales of the resorts is done on-line!
Ruka installed a modern liftticket system provided by Austrian company SkiData AG for the season 1999-2000. The system utilizes modern KeyCard Smart Cards, which can be read at the lift gate even from 40 cm distance. The Swatch Access watches feature the same technology in a wrist watch. The KeyCard-smart cards can be activated hundreds of times, even using the Internet.
When booking a ticket, the following information is needed: - The unique ID-number found on the KeyCard or Swatch Access watch - Starting date of the ski pass and duration in days - Customer name
The ticket is paid using credit card or Finnish Internet banking services. The data is then sent to the ticket system and transferred to all lift gates. When the customer comes to the gate for the first ride, the KeyCard or Swatch watch is identified and the paid lift ticket is coded in the KeyCard memory: all this happens in 2-3 seconds, automatically and using wireless communication between the card and the gate!
